Sweden’s Instrument
– The Nickelharpe
with Judith Nelson-Kjenstad, traditional musician
Nyckelharpa has been played in the Uppland area of
Sweden for hundreds of years possibly as early as the
1300’s. It is now played in all the areas of Sweden and is
the unofficial national instrument. You will be able to
see and hear an instrument built in medieval style as well
as the more recent chromatic version. Nyckelharpa was
traditionally played for dancing and there will be plenty
of Uppland dance music including waltzes, marches and also
the quirky bond polska or farmer polska. Wondering about a
polska? Come find out and
discover Sweden’s national instrument.
Sept 29 - 1pm
"Navigating Norway
Through Sound”
with Arna Rennan, traditional musician
Arna Rennan looks forward to
sharing the oldest of the old traditional ballads, herding
calls, lullabyes, and dance tunes from Norway by
performing and telling anecdotes and stories about their
background. In addition to singing, Arna will demonstrate
the use of the "seljefloyte" (overtone flute). She will
also play on the langeleik, the Norwegian version of the
dulcimer that uses one melody string and seven drones
Sept 29 - 2pm
“Doing The Jig:
Celtic, English and Early American Fiddle Tunes”
with Tom VanCleve, traditional musician
Tom
will play and discuss a variety of fiddle styles ranging
from Old-timey Appalachian, Celtic, French Canadian and
more. Reels, breakdowns, jigs, waltzes and airs are
included in this sampling of traditional dance music
from America, the British Isles and beyond.

History of Unplugged -
A Look Back
"North House Unplugged" came to be
after Jon Vezner and his father spent time in Grand Marais
and discovered North House in 2001. Inspired by the
organization’s commitment to life-long learning and
traditional northern crafts, Jon left town focused on
doing something special for the community and for North
House. Back in Nashville, he decided to organize a benefit
concert, and enlisted a few well-known friends from the
Nashville music scene. He also invited Cook
County’s own Michael Monroe, whose music he knew from his
college days.
All Unplugged events generate funds to
help build an educational endowment for North House. The fund will be managed for
the long term, with earnings targeting special projects
such as scholarship requests, building educational
partnerships with schools & colleges, and enhancing
program resources.
North House Unplugged is just one of several
initiatives designed to create an educational endowment
that can serve as a financial foundation for the
organization. Restricted contributions, memorial gifts and
donations of appreciated stock will also be invested in
the endowment at the donor’s request. |
