Rosemaling

Rosemaling means "rose painting" in Norwegian, and the
Telemark region in Southeastern Norway is known for the classic
look of its painting with asymmetrical scrolls and varied
placement of leaves and flowers. In this course you'll study and
practice basic techniques of this traditional decorative
painting style. You will decorate a plate and then apply the
same techniques to the creation of Christmas ornaments. Plenty
of one-on-one instruction is provided. Students interested in
building a solid base of skills are encouraged to register for
the optional fourth day of instruction for $50.

Rosemaling - Valdres Style & Traditions

Rosemaling is a decorative painting style which originated
in Norway where it traditionally decorated churches, homes and
farmhouse interiors. The Valdres style of rosemaling originated
in the Valdres valley and is known for its strong floral motif.
This course emphasizes the basic techniques of painting these
traditional floral bouquets. You will apply your skills to
decorating a plate and a Christmas tree ornament. Students
interested in building a solid base of skills are encouraged to
register for the optional fourth day of instruction for $50.

Superior/Gunflint Photography - Fall Equinox Session

Capturing inspiring images of the spectacular fall colors
and the rugged landscape of the North is the focus for this fall
session. The course offers a unique opportunity to experiment
with and explore both digital and 35mm photography with magazine
photographer Layne Kennedy. You'll devote time exploring
Superior’s shoreline, combing through colorful boreal forests,
hiking rivers and discovering the picturesque community of Grand
Marais. Primary medium is 35mm digital camera. The course
concludes with each photographer presenting photos to the
group. Workshop participants should be prepared with 35mm
digital cameras with a variety of lenses. Participants should
bring their own cameras, laptop, and media flash cards with
abilities to download images and burn CDs on location.
The first evening of the class, Layne will offer a presentation
discussing the necessary tools for producing successful magazine
quality photographs. Participants will learn how to tell a
story with their images as daily trips explore the pristine
shores of Lake Superior and surrounding Grand Marais community.

The Superior/Gunflint Photography Workshop offers a unique
opportunity to photograph and explore the pristine shores of
Lake Superior with celebrated magazine photographer Layne
Kennedy. The course is designed for the enthusiastic
photographer, amateur or professional, with a focus on both
digital and 35mm photography. You will explore and photograph
the scenic shores of Lake Superior and the pine-laden Superior
National Forest near the picturesque community of Grand Marais.
You will participate in numerous 'field' opportunities, a
variety of classroom sessions and a student slide show
'critique' to develop and enhance your photography skills.
Workshop participants should be prepared to photograph with
digital cameras (and/or 35mm or 120mm) and a variety of lenses.
Participants should bring their own film or digital flash cards,
and laptops, with abilities to download images and burn CDs.
The first evening of the class, Layne will offer a presentation
and discuss his approach to photography. He will spend each day
with the group discussing and demonstrating the necessary
techniques for creating quality images. Daily trips along the
shore and to surrounding areas will be determined based on
weather conditions and light quality. Optional night
photography outings may also be possible.
