Carve Your Own Cedar Hand Drum
Eric Mase
Session Options:
. . . 9/27/2008 - 9/28/2008
The timeless beat of the drum stems back to a time when we made our own music literally from the ground up.  Before drum shops and before Putumayo, materials were hand-harvested from the forest to create wonderful sounds and find rhythm in the world. In this course you will learn to  carve a cedar hand drum from a hand-harvested cedar log and then explore hand drumming patterns for lifelong skills with music.  You will also work with softened rawhide as it is stretched to a desired tension and tone in the drum head.

Although every drum will vary depending on the hand harvested log, the finished drum is approximately 8" in diameter and 4-12" in depth.

Explorations Of The Norwegian Overtone Flute
Arna Rennan
Session Options:
. . . 9/26/2008 - 9/27/2008
The overtone flute, or "seljefloyte," is one of the most ancient instruments still in use in northern European countries. It was originally made in the springtime while the sap flowed freely through the willow branch. By tapping and twisting a branch off, a tube was formed, then with a notch and adding the mouthpiece, voila! Its idiosyncrasies of tonality and ornamentation lend itself to a variety of musical styles from traditional Nordic folk to jazz improvisations.  The course will consist of constructing your own flute, hand-carving the mouthpiece, and learning to play traditional melodies.  Arna will provide a thorough background in "nature tonality" and how it influenced Nordic folk music.

A variety of archival and recent recordings, and some musical notations, will shed light on the versatility of this instrument.  Patience and a reasonably good ear are the only requirements for this course.
