Soup's
On - Spring Volunteer Work Weekend
Kelly
Dupre
Session Options:
. . .
5/17/2008
Helping hands of all sizes are needed this spring!!
With spring underway in the North, the rhythm at North
House is
building - time to give the campus some spring TLC. On
the agenda:
** outdoor projects: brooms, rakes, work gloves, rock
skipping
** timber finishing: a little sanding, a little finish,
milling shop underway!
** boat souping: perfect for anyone who likes a paint
brush or roller outdoors
** AND - a harbor-side lunch BBQ or pizza bake for everyone who
helps out!
BUT - you ask, what is boat soup? It’s an unusual
mixture of linseed oil, pine tar and mineral spirits used
to seal and protect wood from inclement weather. The
Norwegians invented the mixture for their beautiful boats
and buildings. Each spring, it seems like North House has
a reason for soupin' a number of shelters, chairs and
boats on campus to ensure longevity. A little
sweeping, window cleaning, painting, and gardening
are just a few of the other activities to choose from.
Everyone will work in small teams on a wide range of
projects.
Please register at least a week
in advance so we can get our array of spring projects
organized and we can order plenty of food. Families are
welcome to attend!

A number of wooden boats grace the North House Folk
School waterfront and finding time for a little tlc is a
priority each spring. Learn to maintain and work with a
variety of wooden boats in this Service Learning project.
Our work may include installing risers, seats and a
breasthook in a 11' Susan skiff, caulking and sealing the
Grayling, a wooden runabout built by legendary North Shore
builder Rueben Hill, and sanding and painting a small
fleet of nutshell prams. North House’s historic 18’
Mackinaw sailboat, the “Paul LePlante,” may also be
refinished, including work done to her masts, boom and
gaff, roiling her decks, thwarts and trunk and “souping”
her exterior planking and bilge.
Your participation and tuition in this service learning
project includes:
* basic sewing and sail rigging skills
* preserving hulls and proper maintenance measures for
wooden boats
* finishing of oars and spars and marine painting
